State Scientific Institution "Powder Metallurgy Institute" (PMI) is an affiliation of the State Research and Production Powder Metallurgy Association (SRaP PMA) which is a structural division of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus. Now the Institute is a multiprofile and interindustry scientific organization going in for issues of development, investigation and usage of new materials in the field of powder metallurgy, composites and super hard materials, protective coatings. The need in the development and production of similar materials was the main reason of the PMI creation, which was conditioned by the tendencies of the economy development in the USSR, firstly - needs of machine-building and instrument making, production of cars, tractors, road-building and agricultural technique as well as making of nuclear and thermonuclear arms, rocket-space technique, aviation and fleet, land military technique, shooting weapon. Now the Institute is a multiprofile and interindustry scientific organization going in for issues of development, investigation and usage of new materials in the field of powder metallurgy, composites and super hard materials, protective coatings. |

The need in the development and production of similar materials was the main reason of the PMI crea-tion, which was conditioned by the tendencies of the economy development in the USSR, firstly - needs of machine-building and instrument making, production of cars, tractors, road-building and agricultural tech-nique as well as making of nuclear and thermo-nuclear arms, rocket-space technique, aviation and fleet, land military technique, shooting weapon. Now priorities in the material science in Belarus are changed: powder metallurgy technologies, composites and super hard materials, protective coatings are used in medicine, tool industry, pharmaceutical and chemical industry, building and light industry, production of mineral and synthetic fertilizers, household appliances, radio electronic apparatus and microelectronics, municipal economy, in the technique for environment protection. The National Academy of Sciences, the European Powder Metallurgy Association and other international organizations have commended developments of the PMI employees and they have been used and they are used in the all above-mentioned branches. Some information about the development of the Institute can be found here. |

MAIN DIRECTIONS OF FUNDAMENTAL IN-VESTIGATIONSFundamental investigations, such as development of scientific method to control properties of composite powder materials on a metallic base, of scientific principles and ways to create and to control the structure and properties of nanocrystalline composite materials and etc. are carried out in the Institute. Experimental investigations of the influence of physical and mechanical effects on the topology of an output of electron of the surface of solids, development of the criterion and method to reveal areas of a stressedly-deformed state on the surface are carried out. DEVELOPMENT AND OUTPUT OF PILOT LOTSThe Institute develops and produces pilot batches of structural materials and products made thereof, antifrictional, electrotechnical soft magnetic and others products. Composite and porous implants from a titanium powder for the orthopaedy and traumatic surgery (implants of vertebras, implants for building of osseous defects ant etc.); implants from high porous foam ceramics and hydroxyapatite are produced. Field of scientific interests With his direct assistance developed is the technology and created is industrial production of porous disc aerators, being sintered from titanium powder and widely used in the technology of purification of potable water and process water, of water treatment of more than 10 towns and 6 large industrial enterprises of CIS. He created a new direction of works, being concerned with the production of porous and composite orthopedic implants from spongy titanium powder with optimal biochemical and others operational properties. Carried out the investigations and developed are the methods and devices to control properties of porous powder materials. |
Dr. Ruslan A.Kusin
Deputy Director on production, chief engineer, Candidate of Technical Sciences, Laureate of the Bonus of the USSR Soviet of Ministers in 1987

Field of scientific interests - technology of production of porous powder materials, including materials with an anisotropic pore structure. With his direct assistance an experimental-industrial production of powder copper alloys by the method of dispersion is mastered in the Institute; the production of filtering elements from bronze powders, as well as corrosion resistant steel, heat pipes with a powder capillary structure on the copper base and effective heat sinks, made thereof, is organized on the Pilot Plant of the Institute and on the Powder Metallurgy Plant in Molodechno. |
